A beautiful story, though slow moving, about an Irish Catholic priest who has an epiphany about life and love. While I found myself yelling "get on with it" from time to time, it was still worthwhile. Great descriptions of rural life and nature.Product details

The Lake George Moore 9781374898936 Books Reviews
This is a crucial work in Moore's oeuvre. It marks the furthest extent of his concentration on Ireland and a turning-point at which he recognizes again, as he did in his twenties, that national identity is too limiting for a fully developed inidividual. His next work would be 'Hail and Farewell', which does just that - bids a final, not entirely fond farewell to his homeland. In 'The Lake' the cost of departure is brooded over, at first somewhat tediously but at last with dramatic tenderness. More deliberately than Stephen Dedalus a decade on, the protagonist - a provincial priest - weighs a future of the unknown against a present of stagnant comfort and safe obscurity. The last scene, in which he abandons his cassock and swims to the limits of his strength across a moonlit lake, is among the great moments of daring in literature, anticipating radical breaks for freedom in works by not only Joyce, but also D. H. Lawrence, Somerset Maugham and Jack London.
The book has a preface in French, but the rest of the entire novel is in English. Great deal (free) for a classic piece of literature about desperation and settling in life and the benefit of making a change.
I found the plot device of speaking through letters to be a little cumbersome. I liked the issues he discussed, but I would have found it easier to follow in a more traditional narrative. It was hard to like the protagonist.
The type font was microscopic.
