Space is the final frontier, but it has never been this sexy or fun.

Captain Liam Synar of the spaceship Liberator made a huge mistake concerning the female he mated. Putting his family’s daemon inside Ania two years ago had been an desperate act to save her when she’d almost died saving him. Though he’d rather be dropped into a Torian volcano, instead he has to go to Pleiades and make the situation right.

Malachi, The Daemon of Synar, recently killed to protect Ania and his clueless mate is on trial for the crime. Liam’s time of keeping Ania safely unaware of her fate has at last run out. Coveting Malachi's enormous power, Conor Synar, his exiled evil brother hunts his ship, wanting to capture the powerful and destructive alien that Liam's life mate unknowingly hosts. The only way to protect her from now on is to keep her by his side

Liam has no choice but to tell his mate the truth about what he did, even if it means facing the wrath of the only female he’s ever loved. A man in love is a desperate, crazy being. How impossible was it to hope she might forgive him?

The Daemon Of Synar A Sci Fi Romantic Comedy Forced To Serve Book 1 eBook Donna McDonald

This is a prequel to the novel Forced to Serve. It takes a while to understand just what capabilities beings have, as the genealogy is so very complex, and everyone has different ages and powers.

The book isn't so much about the Demon of Synar, but the Demon master and the Demon host. Once you figure out what's going on, it becomes much more interesting. I especially liked the brash yet fresh character of Gwen, who at only thirty five years of age deals with others who are centuries older than her.

As a lead-in to a novel, this story gives a good taste of what you are getting yourself into. Heavy on the internal and external dialogue and not a lot of action. Part of that is because the characters powers are so complex. If you like that kind of thing - mental capabilities, warriors who can control you with a word, demon possession and many different types of alien hybrids, then this is just the book for you.

The Daemon Of Synar A Sci Fi Romantic Comedy Forced To Serve Book 1 eBook Donna McDonald Reviews

Starting out with a scene that turns out to be completely necessary for the background information, we are quickly introduced to Liam Synar, his best friend Dorian, his chosen mate Aria and the central character for conflict Malachi the demon in servitude to the Synar family.

Incorporating multiple races of beings, the story is consistently informed by the behavioral customs and approaches particular to the different races, some even creating moments of levity to break up the overwhelming tension emanating from Liam Synar.

There are many different elements coming to play in this story good versus evil, knowing your partner, being honest about your history and background and being careful to listen, not just speak. Both Aria’ and Liam’s sides of the story are clearly laid out nether was 100% honest partly trust, partly selfishness on both parts, the story is really all about consequences, rebuilding trust and learning to be honest with one another.

Toss in several beings that are intuitive to precognitive, a smart-mouthed and cocky female human-mix and some flirtatious male crew members and there is no lack of characters to enjoy.

Narration in this story is provided by Allyson Johnson and she manages quite competently to present the voices of the characters with slight distinct changes in tone, pitch and delivery. Particular favorite of mine was her use of a whispery growl for Malachi, even in his conversation with Aria as she was demanding answers. Polished without great distracting moments, she kept the flow of the story without overdramatizing the author’s words.

As a start of a new series this is one that is full of characters to give everyone a favorite. Stopping with plenty yet to be sorted and solved, I am looking forward to the next installment.

I received an AudioBook copy of the title via AudioBook Jukebox for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review all conclusions are my own responsibility.
What an amazing book and series.

Donna is one of those authors that I will carry on reading until I have devoured all her books.

Although this is a scifi book, it focuses almost exclusively on the people, their hopes, fears and tragedies, and it is done well. If you truly want to be swept away into a unique and fascinating world, this book should do it for you - it certainly did for me.
I could not stop at the end of any of the books, and simply had to buy the next in the series and carry on reading.
While Donna McDonald is known for her romantic comedy series, this is pure McDonald story telling. The characters in The Demon of Synar are darker but more rich. The plot is a bit more complicated and while the romance doesn't take center stage here, it certainly is developing in this book.

In this book -- the first in the series -- we meet Liam Synar on the day of his wedding, or mating as it's called in the book, to Pleiadian ambassador Ania Looren. But as soon as the mating has occurred, assassins arrive to cause chaos. Ania is mortally wounded which is when we find out a huge secret about Liam -- he is a demon master. In a moment of great love, he commands the demon into Ania to save her life. And then promptly leaves her for the next two years for reasons that we find in the book. And the caca hits the fan from there.

This is most definitely a space opera/science fiction story. But I see a lot of the elements of romance in as well. And while the book doesn't end with the usual romantic payoff, the characters are certainly moving in that direction. If nothing else happens to wreck things.

I really got into this first book and I can't wait to read the second part of the story, The Demon Master's Wife. Great book and I recommend it highly.
The book is well written. It falls on a darker side of reading and very intense at time. The romance doesn't stand main stage but it develops beautifully on the side. Definitely love that fact that Donna McDonald set the story in sy-fi outerspace. Kind of reminds me of Star-Trek; all about the action and Spock's love affair is little shown.
The bad side is that this book has been split into a series so you'll just have to buy the other books to completely finish the story. Although I would not be quick to dismiss reading this book because it is filled with drama, fun moments, and you get to know the characters well along the way.
